The episode starts with Bart refusing a dare to pull the fire alarm on his sister's peformance. As he corridors the next day, he is called in by Principal Skinner. Homer and Marge are stood there, anxiously waiting. When Marge hears of the news that Bart refused a dare, she couldn't be any happier. She embarrasses Bart in front of his class. However, Homer is angry at Bart for refusing a dare. He tells Bart that he has to take a dare, no matter how dangerous it is.
The school bullies dare Bart to dive into the reservoir. With Homer's words resonating in his head, Bart accepts the dare. However, instead of landing into the water as intended, he falls onto the hard concrete ground on which the bullies are standing, which lands him in hospital. When he wakes up, he wants to avoid getting Marge upset, so he makes up a lie saying Jesus talked to him.
Soon, Bart's story starts to get popular, and to the extent where Christian movie producers hear of it. They offer Homer a movie deal, to which he accepts, and production starts. However, Lisa is on to him. He starts to have nightmares from Lisa's words. He ends up in Heaven in his nightmare, meeting Marge's father, Clancy Bouvier, and Jesus Christ, who hits his head with the word 'LOVE'.
Finally, the movie, which is called 'Bart's Not Dead', premieres, and it ends up being a big hit. Bart confesses to Marge and Lisa that he lied, and Springfielders soon hear of it. Understandably, they are angry. Homer and Ned, the screenwriters, then announce that all the profits that they made will be donated to charity.
Sitting on top of their house's roof, Bart asks Lisa if God will forgive him for lying, to which she replies with, if God exists, he'll forgive him, as long as Bart regrets what he did. Just after this, they start falling, but land on a pile of leaves, breaking their fall. At the Pearl's Gates, Bart is shown at his death, and Homer says Jesus wants to meet him. Homer instead goes to Hindu Heaven, where he gets turned into a turtle, and then sent back to Earth.
